The teenage victim of the De Anza gang rape has spoken out and says that she wants her day in court.
Finally, we can put an end to the speculation that the victim was not cooperating. I was worried that we were pressing something that she didn’t want pressed. Also, if logic were to prevail (though it rarely does) it should also quiet some of the dissenting voices who ludicrously claim that the DA made the right decision.
Stopfamilyviolence.org has started a petition asking the DA to reconsider.
A Feministing user named Buggle has started a livejournal support group for the victim.
If you have not yet contacted the DA Dolores Carr to ask her to reconsider, PLEASE do so.

Also, PLEASE contact Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith and thank her profusely for her attempts to keep this case open and still find a way to prosecute. She needs our support.

I can only imagine how awful a rape trial must be. From what I’ve read, it’s horrible. It seemed to me like there was plenty of evidence for the DA to prosecute, but I could understand not wanting to put a victim through a trial if they weren’t reasonably sure that they’d get a guilty verdict. Rape trials, from what I hear, are like being raped all over again, but by everyone in the room.
Yes, but the fact is that we’re looking at a victim that wants justice so badly that she’s willing to go through that ordeal. That’s a rarity. If she is willing to put herself under that scrutiny, to sit on that stand and take her stab at justice, who are we to tell her that she doesn’t deserve it?
I hope that the victim gets her day in court and that gets the justice she deserves.
