“How does 59-year-old Mama run against sexy Obama?”

by Cara on June 10, 2007

in 2008 election, Democrats, gender, media, misogyny, politics, sexism, stereotypes

No, really, that is actually a quote. It’s from a piece in the NY Times that claims to be about the difficulty Hillary Clinton faces because she’s not a jock. Of course, that façade doesn’t last for long. After all, how long and interesting could an article about how Clinton doesn’t play basketball be?

So we have to talk about how athletic and manly all of the other candidates are, and how Clinton just can’t match up. Then we have to talk about how she compares to the “athletic” (cough) manliness of her husband– all fair, I’m sure, because he used to be president!

Then we can use that as a jumping off point to talk about how she would be “ridiculed” if she tried to be athletic. It doesn’t say WHY, but it’s heavily implied that it’s because of the common false perception that she’s “overweight” (cause yeah, Bill certainly wasn’t). In all fairness, jackasses like the one who wrote this article probably would ridicule her.

And let’s not forget to throw in a random diatribe about how “stiff” and cold and calculated she is. Not to mention the quote about her being a “59-year-old Mama,” because let’s not forget that she’s a woman who is OLD. Let’s also be reminded that she’s a mother, which means she has a vagina and can’t be expected to make hard, rational decisions.

Oh, and then Patrick Healy (who you can write to here) finishes off by showing what a Nice Guy(tm) he is. As a Fair Journalist, he has offered to spend time with Clinton, enjoying one of her hobbies! And he had to note that the invitation hasn’t been accepted as of yet.

Gee, I wonder why.

I think the other really important thing to point out is how they picked Obama and decided to call him sexy, versus picking out Edwards or some other candidate. It really pisses me off how a lot of media has taken to objectifying him in the same sense that black males usually are. I hate how he can’t be anything other than the cool black brother running.

This instant is a lot less explicit than a lot of commentary on him, but I just wish for the both of them that they could/would be viewed as individuals rather than the old white woman and the hip, articulate black man.

Yes, also a good point.

I like the new look, and this server lets me comment from work — Hooray!

Anyway, yeah. This article seemed completely pointless and unnecessary. Especially the little caricature of Hillary. But I do like how the writer points out a lot of the double standards women politicians face. Rather than criticize Senator Clinton for being colder than her husband, he points out that she probably can’t show too much emotion, because otherwise she will be labelled weak. Such a double-edged sword…

This is all in all pretty ridiculous. How is being athletic important to being president, and since when have we had a president who was actually athletic. Bush Jr. falls off of something and looks like Tina Turner circa 1979 every time it gets warm out, Clinton was a big fat man who only started jogging when he was portrayed as a big stupid fat southerner in the media, Bush Sr was what, 900 years old when he was in office?

And I’m fairly sure Obama has a few kids, but I’m absolutely certain that the number of kids you have has about NOTHING to do with how you could potentially run the most dangerous country in the world.

I think that Obama has two or three kids, but that’s GOOD because it shows how manly his sperm is. And no one wants a president who shoots blanks, right? That’s almost as bad as having a uterus!
