As if there weren’t already enough reasons to not prosecute rape cases . . .

The Duke Lacrosse rape prosecutor is now facing disbarment.
Certainly, Mike Nifong did not handle this case very well. In fact, he may have even hurt the victim’s chances. But that’s not what he’s on trial for. He’s on trial because he did his job. And even if he did it poorly, at least he tried like hell to take this case to trial and to get a conviction. A rape conviction. A rape conviction where the victim was a black woman who takes off her clothes for a living, and the alleged perpetrators were all-American white athletes. You find me another lawyer who is willing to take on that case, to face that risk to his or her career. It won’t be in Santa Clara County, that’s for sure.
But that was his real crime, after all, wasn’t it? Heaven forbid someone actually believe a woman who says she was raped. That is what Nifong did. We can debate all day about whether he was right or wrong to believe this woman, and I don’t really want to have that debate here. But that’s what he’s on trial for– for believing a victim, defending her statements and trying to prosecute the alleged perpetrators. So he called the lacrosse players “a bunch of hooligans.” Yes. Prosecutors make statements like that about alleged perpetrators all the time.
When defense attorneys make disparaging, offensive statements about rape victims, everyone wants to argue that they’re just doing their job. We don’t disbar them, even when we probably should.
But believing a Stupid, Lying Whore– a stupid, lying, black stripper whore– is an unforgivable offense. And now all rape victims are going to suffer for Mike Nifong’s “sins.”

He’s facing disbarment for very questionable legal practices and ethics violations. He smeared the names of three young men, who will forever be tarred by her decidedly false allegations.
But that part isn’t really important, is it?
