Does this look tarty to you?

After a brief hiatus, the Offensive Remark makes a comeback.

Dan Rather, in talking about his news anchor successor Katie Couric, said (emphasis mine):

“the mistake was to try to bring the ‘Today’ show ethos to the ‘Evening News,’ and to dumb it down, tart it up in hopes of attracting a younger audience.”

Niiiice.

You know, I rarely watch the news (I prefer to read it), and therefore haven’t seen the job that Ms. Couric is doing. For all I know, it very well might suck. What I do know, though, is that regardless of whether or not she is a good news anchor, most of the coverage surrounding her role in that position has been undeniably sexist. I also know that (again, regardless of her skill), there is absolutely no reason to use the word “tart.” It’s a 100% sexist, misogynist word, it is doubtlessly referring to Ms. Couric, and there’s no excuse for it.

Have the dumbed the newscast down? Again, I haven’t seen it, so I don’t know. Have they “tarted it up” by bringing in a female news anchor? Fuck no. And fuck you, Mr. Rather. Ms. Couric is not a “tart.” No woman should ever be called a “tart,” no matter how tactless breasts may seem to you. And you are the only one lacking any class, here.
