Forget Bad Luck with Good News

Friday the 13th, my ass! As your week ends, here are some things to be happy about:
A law is now in effect in Pennsylvania that guarantees the right of women to breastfeed in public without harassment. It’s pretty damn sad that we’re still passing these kinds of laws in 2007. It’s also pretty damn sad that there’s no federal laws on the matter and that 11 states still don’t have this kind of protection in place. But kudos to PA lawmakers, all the same, for protecting the rights of women. Pennsylvania mothers, feed your babies in peace!
Since the FDA approved the sale of Plan B over the counter to women over 18, sales of the emergency contraceptive have doubled. Hooray for greater awareness and access! Obviously hysterical conservatives who want to see women punished for their sexuality are throwing a fit– but fuck ‘em.
And finally, teen pregnancy rates are down and teen condom use has increased. And no, it has nothing to do with more teens having sex– in fact, fewer are having sex. Also, use of oral contraceptives among sexual active teenagers has held steady. This is great. It means that U.S. teenagers are better educated about the use of condoms and about the need to protect against STDs as well as pregnancy. With only 63% of teenagers reporting using condoms during their last sexual encounter, we’ve still got a way to go, but we’re definitely on the right track.
So smile. It’s not all bad.

“Men, their rights, and nothing more; women, their rights, and nothing less.” — Susan B. Anthony

I just froth at the mouth when morons object to babies EATING IN PUBLIC. If just once it was some moron who never ate in public himself, that would be ok. If this person also objected to babies with bottles or grownups with big macs. I would think, ‘This person has a disorder that causes him to freak out when PEOPLE IN GENERAL eat in public.’ But no, it’s always people who somehow object to seeing about as much boob as some women show just wearing their everyday outfits is exposed, only WITH A BABY NEAR IT. And the reason I froth at the mouth is that I know that deep down the reason these people object is that they want boobs to be sexual objects, toys they use for their own purposes, and they are actually offended by someone using a boob for it’s actual intended purpose. Boobs can be exposed for men to look at, but not to serve any useful function.
