Last night, the Senate voted to overturn the Global Gag rule– not just partially, but entirely!

Of course, even if negotiations with the House go well, Bush has vowed to veto the bill. But what an amazingly symbolic victory. Fuck you, Mr. President– the tide is turning, and it’s against bigoted, misogynist ideologues like yourself. I bow at the feet of the always kick-ass Sen. Barbara Boxer for promoting this bill and getting passed. And a big thank you to all of the Senators who have finally decided to wake up, pay attention and do what’s right.

It’s good news, and I hope Bush would see that the Gag Rule was one of the worst things he’s done since he’s been in office.

Yeah, unfortunately it was also the first thing he did– gotta uphold that Reagan legacy, you know– and it’s unlikely that the day will ever come. Bastard.

It’s a shame a veto needs two thirds majority – i.e. both parties – to override it – unfortunately too many see the US constitution as somehow “sacred” and unchangeable – thats why there is no ERA etc.

WOOHOO!!!!! This is absolutely the best news I’ve read in SO long! That honestly was one of the most infuriating pieces of legislation ever–I gave a few presentations on it in high school and people (even right-wing types) were always just floored that it existed. The veto thing, of course, does make it a little less sweet. :(
