For those of you following the ENDA debate — and even to those of you who aren’t — now is the time to act!
According to the Human Rights Campaign (who, let’s just say it now, have not been fully supportive of the transgender community during this debate), Rep. Tammy Baldwin will introduce an amendment to ENDA that will make the bill transgender inclusive. This is the chance for the LGBTQ community and all of their allies to stand together and say no, we’re not going to sell out our transgendered friends.
This is urgent!
Call Congress at (202) 224-3121. It will provide a directory to help you find your congressional representative. When you get in contact, tell them that you would like to leave a message stating something along the lines of: I’m a constituent and I’d like to urge Rep. [insert name] to support the Baldwin Amendment to the Employment Non-Discrimination Act when it gets to the floor. The bill is H.R. 2015, they will ask for your name and maybe your address.
Get calling! If you’ve never called your representative before, I promise that it’s not nearly as scary as it sounds. And even if your representative (like mine) hasn’t got a chance in hell of supporting any ENDA, call anyway. We’ve got nothing to lose here, and everything to gain.
