I’m bringing back the Bad Ass Women’s Activist of the Week segment for some particularly bad ass people.

For those of you who aren’t currently reading the new Planned Parenthood blog I Am Emily X, you should be. Every day they post a different story and video of a different, anonymous Planned Parenthood clinic worker or volunteer (all of whom they call “Emily X”), talking about their experiences working at their clinic, and namely dealing with the protesters who are outside. They started it as a counter to the insane “40 Days of Life” protests taking part across the country. Whether the blog will continue once the campaign is over, I’m not sure, but I really hope that it does.

Today’s video is particularly interesting. It’s by a doctor who used to work with Dr. Slepian, and was one of the first doctors to go back to work at his clinic after the murder. He was assigned 9 federal marshals for his protection.

It’s chilling, and particularly so for me. Dr. Slepian was killed about an hour from my home. I was only 13-14 years old at the time, so my memory of the news coverage is vague and spotty. But since I now work at an abortion clinic a little over an hour from Dr. Slepian’s old clinic, it’s hard for the story — and the mere mention of Dr. Slepian’s name — to not strike a chord. Here’s the doctor, and please, make sure to check out the other videos of Emily X.

It’s funny how when people talk about terrorism, they talk about Middle Eastern Muslims, even though the U.S. has managed to produce quite a few non-Muslim terrorists right here on our own turf. Kudos to this doctor for refusing to be intimidated.

Thank you SO much for talking about this. Definitely a fantastic site with some real things to say. I love it, although sometimes I can’t read as much as I want to or even should because I become beyond outraged. I guess that could be a good thing, but hey, my anger fuels my blog, so it can’t be that bad, huh? Thanks again for writing about this, I know where I’m spending my afternoon now!

I wonder, if and when these extremists see a video like this, how they reconcile an obviously gentle, contemplative man like the one in this video with the antichrist murderers they portray these doctors to be.

I pretty much doubt that they bother. They also portray the doctors to be incredibly manipulative to poor unsuspecting women who have no clue what an abortion actually is — so clearly they would have to pretend to be nice and stuff in public, or their little charade would be up. Right? Or some shit like that, I’m sure. If you’ve ever tried to corner, or see someone else try to corner an anti-choice nut, you’ll see that they have an answer for everything, even though their answers don’t really resemble actual answers.

But I was also struck by the guy’s calm demeanor. Personally, I’d be like “So, when those motherfucker psychopath terrorists killed my buddy/colleague . . .” But then again, I imagine that he would have had to come to term with things, knowing that he obviously can’t change them, if he wants to continue doing his job. Which, by the way, I think is an amazing thing. Anyone who will continue to go into work and do their job after that is, quite simply, a hero. Especially since scaring them out of helping women is precisely what the nuts are aiming for. It takes a certain kind of person for that, I think.
