Well done Cara...I think though that your criticism "that this isn't our teaching moment" is well meant, but ideally (not exploiting this young woman/adolescent/girl/teen-mother) should be the standard--she's young and the media can be incredibly hurtful and in many ways, she was born into celebrity (via her sister) than cultivated on her own (would she be the star of a Nick show without Britney? Probably not). But, we are in the hyper-media saturated age and looking at her pregnancy as a "teaching moment" is better than a pure entertainment/scandal moment.

Another thing that might come up out of her pregnancy, perversely, might be blaming Jamie Lynn for the abstinence-only fallout--meaning, that there is already an increase in teen-pregnancy (the first since before Clinton's administration) and it has a great deal to do with abstinence only education--Jamie Lynn herself said something along the lines of "people should wait for marriage to have sex, but I can't judge because I didn't." That line could have come from any teen exposed to abstinence only education!!! As if that's it--sex before or after marriage (like accidental pregnancy doesn't happen in marriage and that people outside of marriage can't prevent pregnancy/stds with contraception/condoms!!!!). Crazy, right?

Well, I wouldn't be surprised if the right wing tends to paint the coming teen-pregnancy crisis on girls "looking up to and copying Jamie Lynn" verses the reality of the fall-out of abstinence only education!!! ugh, I wouldn't be surprised.

You know what I love? When people leave comments on my posts without reading them, espousing the very point of view that I am criticizing, with absolutely no apparent self-awareness or need to justify their argument. I swear to god that people do technorati searches for subjects on which they think they have something intelligent to say, and then leave their brilliant commentary everywhere they can without bothering to check what they're actually commenting on.

But farren, in the off chance that you come back and didn't get the point: it's none of your business when any particular teenager starts having sex, and certainly not your place to try to make random guesses at their ages. It's even less your business what a woman, teenager or not, does with her pregnancy or what she does with the child if she chooses she gives birth. I assure you that if she wanted an abortion, she would have had one with or without your advocacy, and would have also made the decision to give her child up for adoption, if she wanted to, without your incredibly wise input.

Jamie lynn is too young to be a parent! I don't advocate abortions but I do think that this child should be put up for adoption! I can't believe her mother allowed her to date this guy that is 3 years older! Was she dating him at age 14? I guess she started having sex at 14. I know that she's not the first to get pregnant at 16 but you would think that condoms could have prevented this pregnancy. I honestly think that she wanted to get pregnant so that her and casey would have a closer bond! What happened to waiting until your married? Okay yeah I know no ones waits until marriage but I do believe that all teens should wait until they are 18 to have sex. That way they are old enough to takes care of their responsibilites!

So you read an article's-worth of quotes to the effect of "Oh my G-d, who could have suspected that a Hollywood actress might ever violate a social norm," and your reaction was not to laugh your head off and wonder where the Times found these idiots?

Sheesh, no wonder people say feminists lack a sense of humor. :-P

I guess "stable family life" = "husband"?

Selling the story to a tabloid was crass and tacky. The Spears family is crass and tacky. But once Jamie Lynn Spears decided she was going to have the baby and raise it, it had to come out -- and the number of hate-filled statements I've seen about her really depresses me. It's not most people's ideal situation to have a child at 16, but she's healthy, she's rich, and she has some sources of emotional support. Adult women give birth in worse situations every day.

And I can only second the "fuck off and die" to the commenter who thinks it's "irresponsible, immature and selfish" to have sex outside of marriage (roughly half of American teenagers and 95% of American adults are irresponsible, immature and selfish?) or that JLS has some duty to give the baby up for adoption -- presumably to some married couple who've proved they're better people than she is by not having birth control slip-ups in their teenage years.

As if we needed any more proof that abstinence-only programs are a total failure, this (Jamie Spears preggers) is it.

1. I find it absolutely hilarious that someone from True Love Waits actually left a comment on my blog. There's a sign of accomplishment. Go me! Next I'll be hearing from Operation Rescue.

2. Jana: fuck off and die. And then rot in hell. And since you're so down with judgment and all, I can only assume that you won't mind me telling you that you're either a very ignorant or very bad person.

She pretty much opened herself up to it. She sold her story to a sleezy magazine. I wish she was not getting as much attention as she is and I am very sick of hearing about her. Way to go Jamie Lynn Spears! What an example to set! Betcha feel real good now right? RIGHT?! RIGHT!!?! If I had a teenage daughter she would be very much educated on premarital sex and if we ever landed in this boat we would handle it together, just our family, and would NEVER say: "Hmmm...lets tell everyone we can and milk it for all it's worth". The responsible, mature and selfless thing to do would quit her job as a nickelodeon actress, give the baby up for adoption and just take it easy at home and have a quiet, easy pregnancy, but I suppose she's already proven herself irresponsible, immature and selfish or she would not be in this situation. What a shame a child is going to be born into this situation. No amount of money can buy a stable family life that a child needs.

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their hard work. 10 For if one of them should fall, the other one can raise his partner up. But how will it be with just the one who falls when there is not another to raise him up? - Ecclesiastes 4:9,10
