   I’m with Cara. I’m sour grapes, too. I was pulling for Sen. Clinton.

   Edwards. If I was on Hillary’s side, I probably wouldn’t be nearly this desolate. Though I imagine that her supporters are very nervous right now.

   Obama supporter, huh?

   It’s not that I hate the guy by any means. But I truly believe in Edwards. And Obama? Well, he’s just okay to me.

   Guilty as charged. A second place in the very first primary/caucus isn’t a deathly blow to Edwards, by any means, as I sure you know. See what happens on Monday.

   I just contributed $50 to the Edwards campaign–he’s still in it. I’m in a funny place, the thing is, I think that we have a bounty of good Democratic candidates! I support Edwards because I think he’s the most progressive voice in the field and he isn’t afraid to tell it like it is regarding the strangle-hold multi-national “neoliberal” corporations have over our lives and our political processes. Obama and Clinton are still very “neoliberal” in terms of their economic policies (+NAFTA, etc.); also, Edwards has the best health-care reform plan, which though blended would actually use market forces to favor a single-payer system more so than the patch-work of “gum in the cracks” Clinton and Obama’s plans would effect. Yet, despite all this the political parties are VASTLY different and elections do matter and if Hillary or Obama or Richardson were the nominee, I’d get behind that nominee! So much bile and misogyny is being thrown at Hillary and I resent that and I would take up for her in a second (even though she’s not my first, second or third choice); I still respect her and in some ways I do recognize that her economic policies help someone like me (middle-class), though Edwards’ economic policies help us all (particularly the poor and those in the developing world). Obama inspires me and I’ve teared up hearing him before. If he’s the nominee, I’ll support him as well (though my boss, who is a 50-something African American man is deeply concerned about how race might play out and that’s grounded in his real-life experiences as a part of an older generation that saw some pretty disgusting Southern race strategies on the GOP side. He’s a Hillary Clinton supporter.) If Edwards was Obama’s VP, I think that Obama could be persuaded to liberalize his medical reform plan, but I think that due to the baggage from the 92-94 health-care reform attempt, Hillary would be bogged down and beholden.

   So, anyway, go give $10 or $50 or whatever to Edwards, Obama, or Hillary if you feel the momentum. I do :)

   Oh, and about Huckabee–I think that he is a real threat. I don’t think he’ll play well in New Hampshire because the Repubs there are more libertarian and economic conservatives–both groups seriously fear Huckabee–but in terms of how the media is making him their darling (“he’s cool, he plays the bass guitar” or “he’s folksy”)–what the fuck he is is bat-shit crazy.

   He may do very well in South Carolina–that in itself could build momentum and somethings a sense of growth is all you need to get the heard (especially the Republican heard which hates to think or do research).

   Oddly enough, he does have more programs for the poor than any other Republican EVER, but he hates wominns, loves rapists, lied about gastric bypass (and uses his weight-loss to push an anti-universal health-care agenda because if he can do it all on his own–and that shows moral fiber–than so can the 67% of Americans who are overweight and giving them healthcare would keep us from somehow exercising and eating our veggies), he wants to turn public schools into xianist madrassas, he thinks Christ is coming any day now so screw the environment, he’s spiteful about gay rights, he supports ignorance peddling (abstinence only education) in place of solid facts, and to paraphrase Al Sharpton, “he loves fetuses but he hates babies.”

   I think that Huckabee is dangerous because Evangelicals paired with racists (yes, many overlap) is a powerful combination in this country.

    I’m really not as optimistic as either of you about Edwards’ prospects at this point. He’s not going to win New Hampshire. He’s very far behind in the polls in every other early voting state. Edwards’ campaign themselves admitted that their hopes were pinned on Iowa. He had been campaigning there for years. Obama beat him significantly, and I’m really not so sure that beating Hillary by a two-tenths of a percentage point is going to win him the votes that he needs.

    But yes, of course, I will support the Democratic nominee whomever he or she may be, as well. Hell, I supported John Kerry, so clearly I can support anyone who runs against Republicans if I put my mind to it. But I’ll still be sorely disappointed.

    Also, if Obama gets the nomination he might offer VP to Edwards, but I’m not so sure that he would take it. He’s been there and done that, and I’m not sure that it’s worth it to him anymore when he has a sick wife. Just saying.

    Edwards and the VP position: I agree, he might not take it, but even Richardson’s plan is more progressive than Obama’s on healthcare and he’s been running for VP since the start. So, I guess what I meant to say is that whoever is Obama’s VP might be able to integrate his/her (his) ideas about healthcare into the platform.

    I know that Edwards was counting on Iowa, but I think that he’s still in it to win it. There’s always South Carolina and Nevada and in Florida, all of the Democrats have limited campaigns because of scheduling the primary too early, so that’s also a possibility for an upset.
