Amy: I read that article. Did you notice how the reporter described their choice of eating or not eating dessert as paralleling their sexual choices. Talk about Freudian, not to mention sexist.

I thought that the Dunbar flier raised some good points. Obviously, I don't think that those boys are "victims" as the flier claims, but there is something seriously wrong with trying 14 and 15 year olds as adults. The brain of an adolescent is not developed in the same way that an adult brain is. I need to dig up a bunch of literature about this subject from an adolescent psych class I took, but I remember the specifics being pretty compelling.

I'm not in any way trying to excuse the disgusting and heinous nature of their behavior, and they certainly deserve to be punished, I'm just saying that they should not be tried as adults. If what the flier claims about African American youth being tried as adults at dramatically higher rates than white youth is true (which I wouldn't find surprising), then there is an important issue being raised about racism in our judicial system. I don't think it's good that they're trying to confound the concept of "they're too young to be tried as adults, as are many African American youth" with the concept of "why aren't they telling us the details of this case, because these boys are obviously innocent of any wrongdoing," since that doesn't do anything to help their cause. It isn't unfair that they're being prosecuted, since they perpetrated some of the worst crimes I've ever heard about, just the way in which they are being prosecuted.

Hehehe. Yeah, I have to admit, I was pretty shocked at that particular response too ;) It's good to know that I'm not the only one who finds me amusing.

You know, every time I come to your site, I leave pissed off. Not at you, Cara, but pissed off for many of the same reasons you are obviously pissed off about.
And Thomas Reynolds drowning kittens is crossing the line!
Thanks for lighting the fire of my righteous indignation.
