I've had (and inflicted) a few sleep injuries myself - once I karate chopped my ex's shoulder in my sleep so hard his arm went numb.

The worst was one I did to myself though. I dreamed that someone was trying to grab my daughter and I took a swing at them. I woke up when my fist went through the sheetrock - sprained my wrist.

Well there was this time when I woke up and rolled over at the same time that my husband was waking up and starting to sit, and my elbow went right into his eye socket.

What to see my husband turn gray and panicky? Remind him of the time he nearly "decked" me in his sleep. Apparently he was fighting a big one eyed ogre and rolled over and smacked me right in the eye. He was asleep at the time so there was no force behind it...sort of like a hand falling on you...but he woke up just as his fist was landing on my eye. Four years later he still is visibly shaken whenever I tease him about it.

I figure you sleep with someone for more than 5 years...someone is going to get hurt at least once. :)

Love means never having to say “You’d better put some ice on that eye.”

Well there was this time when I woke up and rolled over at the same time that my husband was waking up and starting to sit, and my elbow went right into his eye socket. That looked pretty painful, and after apologizing profusely I do believe I got him some ice.

But as a general rule, I think that the sentiment holds true ;)

Regardless of the motivation, the action against women is wrong. I don't really care what word is applied to it. He paints this like its no big deal that some men beat on women because they don't do it out of hatred. Hatred or some fucked up idea of honor, same result and it's still wrong. Why make lame excuses for bad behavior?

Shorter Kristof: The poor menz are just trying to pass on their genes and do everything in their power to make sure they don't put their precious resources into someone else's kid since we all know women are lying whores!

Exaclty, lepidopteryx - next time a man hits me or tries to force himself on me, I will just keep in mind that he is actually honoring me and that he is hard-wired to do so, there is nothing he can do about it - not his fault!
Are you fucking kidding me?
Geez.

I don't know what happened to Kristof to make him say something that idiotic. Misogyny and sexism are one and the same. So, I agree -- Mr. Kristof shouldn't get a pass on this posting on his NYT blog.

I do prefer your take to Amanda's, personally. I don't see the point of giving Kristof any credit for some elusive "point" in there somewhere. The racism you pointed out didn't occur to me at first (i was so angry when I was reading it), but its glaringly obvious now. He is just revolting.
