The most frustrating false information out there has GOT to be the info like this: That one knows is false, but has somehow turned into an accepted idea. Like… I don’t know… the one about rape being more often falsely reported than other crimes. Bad example, but… eh. I’m tired.
I’m forwarding this to my dad. He has to be one of the smartest people I’ve ever known, but get him on his “liberal media bias” rant, and it’s… just… *headdesk*
In fact, it has a conservative one? For real?!
Heavens to Betsy!
Ali, perhaps a more appropriate comparison would be that study that recently came out saying that women — OMG — don’t suck at math. The intelligent among us where like “uh huh . . . and?” But at the same time, it’s also nice to have a study backing up the regularly denied common sense.
I’m in agreement with Ali. Maths is a skill question, whereas the “liberal bias” is about “oh, poor put-upon persecuted oppressed us” – exactly the kind of thinking that goes into paranoia about false accusations.
Maybe a good comparison would be the widespread belief that media and court systems always believe and favour women who make rape accusations – that takes a similar level of willful delusion to believe.
I have to admit, I think there is an anti-Conservative Party bias in the media here, but that’s because our current government, bless their wee cotton socks, has refused to speak to the media except in very controlled circumstances since being elected. The media is refusing to play ball. It’s actually kinda funny to watch.
Well, until I read the National Post. *sigh*
Even if it did, which it clearly does not Liberal is not a dirty word and is certainly a more inclusive form of politics than conservatism. To be a conservative means wanting to preserve the status quo and since our social institutions are filled with racial, gender, age, and class biases I see nothing that does not need to be rebuilt from the bottom up.
