Cell phones are a primary triggers of roadside bombs. If you are a truck driver working in Iraq you really would like to see a complete ban on cell phones. Additionally anyone who has ever been in a ground combat branch can see the value of having a spotter adjust where the artillery is landing. As for rape I am all for stringing the culprits up by something other than the neck.

[...] The Curvature - KBR Bans Cell Phones and Silences Rape Victims: So. KBR employee is raped by her coworkers and then kidnapped and held prisoner. Employee secures her release through use of a personal cell phone. KBR doesn’t really give a shit about any of it. Employee makes a lot of noise about the incident, making KBR look really bad, even if not actually impacting the company financially. KBR bans personal cell phone use. [...]

Ugh. Also, if cell phones are banned, employees will have to use company-provided land line phones which can be more easily tapped -- this way they can also find out if any employees are spreading info about their way-beyond-hostile work environment to the media or trying to get help if they've been abused.

Also, I wonder if there are loopholes...like what if somebody got a satellite phone?

Or maybe “safety and security concern” means “the safety and security of our government contracts and image.” Looking at KBR’s long, repulsive history in this area, I tend to lean towards the latter, and I’m far from being the only one.
They've already shown a willingness to cover up rapes and protect rapists in their ranks, so even if there was a legitimate reason, they would still regard the isolation of victims and stifling of reports as a bonus. It's the "but he isn't really like that" defence raised to an institutional level: "it's not what our company is really like," "it's not what our work in Iraq is really about." Bullshit, and evil.

That's terrifying. How must every woman now working for KBR feel? I'm guessing they didn't say "Yes, work for us and be a good employee and maybe risk your life, and oh by the way we might rape and imprison you even though we're on the same side, and not only will they not get in trouble for it, you won't be able to contact help. That'll be okay, right?" during the job interview, even though clearly they should have.
Also, I never even thought about the fact that the "sympathetic guard" could have freed her and didn't.
Truly, really horrifying.
