Voter Registration
Filed Under 2008 election, politics | Posted by Cara |

Just a reminder: voter registration deadlines are looming. If you are not registered, get on it! If you know people who are not registered, remind them, poke them and prod them. Remember that if you have recently moved, you may have to update your info in order to avoid problems on election day. And if you’re a college student living in a different state than where you’re registered, you have a right to vote in the state where you go to school rather than by absentee ballot. (Of course if you’re from a swing state and going to school in a non-swing state, keeping your registration as is may be a better idea for you.)
The Feminist Majority Foundation has the list of all voter registration deadlines for each state. And the man we’re rooting for, Barack Obama, has made it super easy to register and find your polling location. If it’s been a while since you’ve voted or you’re just not sure whether you’re signed up right, you can also use that site to verify your registration. It only takes three minutes, so go! Now!

“Men, their rights, and nothing more; women, their rights, and nothing less.” — Susan B. Anthony

Living in Australia, the idea that people have to be encouraged to vote scares me. It’s so important to vote, in fact, it’s illegal not to here. It’s a good system.
Fi — my husband is Australian and I lived in Sydney for two years. So knowing what I do know about the Australian voting process, to be perfectly honest, if I could take one thing from it, it wouldn’t be the mandatory voting thing (though I’m not opposed to it) — it would be the preferential voting. Hands down. What a dream come true that would be . . .
Has anyone else had trouble trying to use the VoteForChange site on Firefox? I tried to pull my reg to make sure my address change had gone through, but it wouldn’t work at all. I had to switch to Internet Explorer to do it. (And now I feel all dirty inside.)
It’s working fine in Firefox for me, but who knows when it comes to Firefox. I have perpetual problems getting videos to play.
Same here, Cara. I’m trying out Opera, because I flat refuse to go back to IE as primary browser, and Opera’s been recommended as a lean, stable browser.
Back on topic, it’s awfully telling that Democrats are trying to make it easier for people to register and vote, while Republicans are trying to thin the voter lists.
About 33 days till Canada’s election that started a week ago. I don’t think people need to register themselves. Being a student, I’m not sure of how most people do it but I’ll be bringing in ID and proof of address on Oct 14 and will be fine I think. Is registration quick and simple there?
