But it seems to me that the only selfish one around here is the one...
Professing to have the conviction that all life has value, but then claiming to be an "abortion victim" rather than the murderer those convictions would actually suggest.

Leah -- if you think that refusing to bring an unwanted child into the world is selfish, then call me selfish until the cows come home. But I fight every day of my life for the hateful likes of you to have the right to make your own choices, and to have the right to regret those choices later. I believe that having the right to make a choice we regret is one of our most important freedoms. And I'm selfish enough to want you to have it, too.

But it seems to me that the only selfish one around here is the one saying "I made a choice that I regret, and I'm pissed about that, so from now on no woman ever gets to make another choice for as long as they live BECAUSE I SAID SO." I'm weird like that.

Every post I have read on this site proves to me how selfish most people are. I am a rape victim, an abortion victim and a feminist that has learned through the difficult circumstance of miscarriage that all life has value. Even each of you that have very sick and selfish thoughts have value. In SD there was not one abortion reported in 2007 for rape. 97% of the abortions reported in 2007 were for the convienience of not having a child. Why don't you spend your time talking about the 791 abortions that were performed because of selfishness. I counsel women who are hurting because of their abortions. The most common answer of why they had an abortion and of why I had an abortion was out of selfishness.

There is also, at least for me, the terrifying prospect of the DNA of all women who have had abortions using the rape exception being on file with law enforcement. It does not bode well in my opinion.

Jennifer -- I'm aware of how human reproduction works, and in theory I agree with you. If there was another way that was not cumbersome to get across the horror of a woman having to give birth to the child that she was impregnated with as a result of a rape committed against her and which will carry a significant portion of that rapist's DNA, I'd happily use it. I currently cannot think of one.

Fact is a woman cannot have a 'rapist's child' neither does she have a 'rapist's foetus.' This neatly reinforces view that women are just receptacles of men's babies!! What does happen is that male rapists can impregnate a woman and thereby force her to become pregnant but what they cannot do is 'give the woman his child.' Women are the ones who 'have children' not men. The male role when reproduction is desired is to provide sperm in order that a woman can conceive and produce a foetus - so claiming women have 'rapists' children' is totally untrue. Do we really believe that women are just carriers or do we want to speak the truth which is that both women and men are involved in reproduction and neither gender 'owns a child' or has the other gender's child.

The south Dakota recommendations in reality reinforce misogynstic view that women are just carriers of men's children and their sole part is to have a 'man's child.'

Since it is women and not men who are the ones who carry a foetus and give birth to a child it must be the woman's decision whether or not terminate a pregnancy not the man's. However, if we believe women cannot have children but rather conceive a 'man's child' it is not surprising there is so much resistance to women's right of owning their bodies. As regards rape once again South Dakota's recommendations are in effect holding women responsible for men's sexual violence against women.

A bit off topic, but...Reading the last of your own posts to which are linked in this post inspired me to finally deal with my rape, which was perpetrated on me two years ago by my boyfriend, whom I'm still with. I realized that I had to recognize that even if it didn't scream "rape" in my mind at the time, it was still rape, even if not on the violent end of the spectrum. I've realized that my boyfriend and I have to discuss this if I'm going to continue with this long-term relationship. I hope it doesn't backfire.
Thanks for your courage and perspectives.
