Senate Passes Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act

by Cara January 23, 2009

Great news! Yesterday, the Senate passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. The new Democratic-led U.S. Senate flexed its expanded muscle on Thursday by overwhelmingly passing a bill to reverse a 2007 Supreme Court decision that made it tougher to sue for pay discrimination. Approved 61-36, the measure is similar to one that Senate Republicans [...]

Blog For Choice: Sexual Rights

by Cara January 22, 2009

Today is the 36th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, and that means it’s also Blog for Choice Day.  Unlike last year (and more like myself), I have little interest in the theme, pro-choice hopes for Barack Obama and the new Congress. I’ve decided that I want to write about something else.  I want to write [...]

Yoko Series Posted at Imagine Peace

by Cara January 21, 2009

I’ll be up front and say that there is really no point to this post except to brag and post more photos of Yoko Ono. Yoko apparently found my blog series about her.  And even more amazing than that, she liked the posts enough to feel compelled to reach out to me with an email. [...]

Change

by Cara January 21, 2009

I have absolutely nothing to add to the abundant commentary that has been made so far about Barack Obama’s inauguration.  All that can be said has been. It was a hugely historic moment that I feel privileged to have seen.  But it’s not the end of our problems, economic, racial or otherwise.  And so on. [...]

What is the Future of Abstinence-Only Sex Education?

by Cara January 19, 2009

I’ve written quite a bit lately — either directly or more indirectly — about abstinence-only education and the dangerous, detrimental effects it has on youth and their ability to protect themselves from STDs and unplanned pregnancy.  Study after study shows that abstinence-only education doesn’t work.  Studies also show that countries that use an honest, comprehensive [...]

Yoko Ono on Yoko-Hate

by Cara January 17, 2009

Yoko Ono has publicly spoken in the past about the hatred directed at her, but I felt particularly compelled to post these brand new comments from an interview given to the Standford News Service.  The interviewer asks some very direct questions about the treatment she received from the public, and they tie in very nicely [...]

Premarital Sex: Just Like Juggling Machetes Over a 12-Year-Old

by Cara January 16, 2009

Meet Derek Dye. Derek Dye is a clown.  Yes, a clown.  A clown who teaches abstinence-only education to middle-schoolers. Seriously. Watch the video below.  Really, you must.  Because there’s nothing like clown tricks set to inspirational music. My first thought is: middle-schoolers are interested in clowns now?  Even clowns that don’t have big red noses? [...]

What’s Causing High Teen Birth Rates?

by Cara January 15, 2009

Last year, we got the news that teen pregnancy rates have risen for the first time since 1991.  But last week, figures were also released on a state-by-state break down of the teen birth rate. Mississippi now has the nation’s highest teen birth rate, displacing Texas and New Mexico for that lamentable title, a new [...]

SD Voters Support Prevention and Education Over Abortion Bans

by Cara January 14, 2009

We already knew that South Dakota voters oppose an abortion ban in their state, based on their decision to shoot down such a measure twice in a three year period.  But South Dakota Healthy Families decided to take the extra precaution of reminding legislators of this fact as the legislative session begins. And the data [...]

Because the “Not in My Shower” Campaign Worked So Well

by Cara January 13, 2009

You may remember the transphobic “Not in My Shower” campaign in Maryland, which aimed to repeal a measure that allowed transgender individuals to use whichever bathroom they were most comfortable with, by connecting transgender people to perversion, pedophilia, and other sexual violence.  The campaign failed in court, and the equal protection law stayed in tact.  [...]
