Oh, I didn’t even read the comments.

Good call.

My “favourite” was the guy who wanted a mandatory prison sentence for any woman whose allegation didn’t get as far as court (with of course no trial and no burden of proof). At least a few people called him on it.

Rape Champion??? That’s seriously insane, what were they thinking? I’ve written about the awful treatment of assault victims in Britain a number of times for SAFER, and there has always been a part of me that thinks, “well at least they’re actually discussing it publicly and admitting they have a serious problem, unlike the in the U.S.” But each time they try to take a step in the right direction I am terribly disappointed. I don’t feel good about this:

Along with specially trained officers, they have received sexual violence training and are part of the initiative that we have been assured will help to address the culture of disbelief that we know, from what women tell us, still exists.

I know what they’re trying to say, but evidence and common sense also tell us that. Why include that caveat? Are the “rape champions” ::shudder:: or the population of never-raped people all male? Is it a dogwhistle to folks like that east-England “champion”–”teh ladeez won’t shut up about how nobody believes them”? That doesn’t seem to be true, judging from the tone, but still, it chafes me.

Also, some of the comments on that article are ATROCIOUS.
