You say: "the men opposing it are directly promoting their right to rape their wives. ... it’s exactly what they’re doing — trying to work out a certain circumstance in which rape is a-ok for them to commit."

I think a slightly more generalized case can be made here. To cite the Bible, there is a moment in the Book of Esther when Xerxes is angry at Vashti for refusing his order to dance (naked?) at his drunken revelry. Haman tells Xerxes he "has to" kick Vashti out, or all wives throughout the kingdom of Persia will feel the right to refuse their husbands (ludicrous, unreasonable) demands. I see a parallel here. Opposition to this bill could easily, I believe, be rooted not directly in a desire to rape one's own wife, yesterday, today, or at some potential point in that future he doesn't relish relinquishing...
or,
opposition to this bill could be rooted more in a sense that wives have no right to refuse their husbands anything. that wives are property. this obviously *includes* the right to rape a wife, but it is actually far broader, in addition.

oh gracious, i've gone and depressed myself. :(

They said if a man is not raping his wife, then he should not be threatened by a law that protects women from being raped by their husbands.

Yeah.

I also notice that as well as religion, both men quoted against the law make references to possession or payment.
