wow, it is hard to know where to begin with all the ways in which this particular bit of United States government/establishment idiocy is wrong.

Let's see, first of all there is the fact that except for the Native Americans and those whose ancestors were brought here against their will as slaves, we are ALL "illegal immigrants" or are the descendants of illegal immigrants. If the Native Americans had decided to pass strict immigration laws, then we all would have ended up back in the various mostly European countries we came from.

"Deporting every Mexican in America" is, of course, a horrible and unjust idea in and of itself. It is even more problematic when one considers that a large chunk of what is now "the United States" used to be part of...oh yes...MEXICO! The entire Southwestern USA...Arizona, New Mexico (gee, wonder why it is called that?), Texas, and most of Nevada and California were stolen from the Mexicans by Anglo Americans...and now some right wing idiots want to expel Mexican-Americans from land that was already stolen from them?? Well, i suppose this is just typical thinking from the sorts of people who thought that the USA should save the Vietnamese, Nicaraguans, Cubans, Chileans, etc etc from themselves in the various wars the USA has been involved in over the years.

Then there is that picture of the USA border wall, which except for the surrounding scenery looks pretty much like the Berlin Wall which the right wing imperialist Ronald Reagan demanded that Gorbachev tear down. Guess the USA really isn't all that different from the Old Soviet "Evil Empire" after all.

And then, of course, there is the issue of the United States establishment's historic and ongoing support for corrupt dictatorships in "third world" countries such as Mexico. All done in the name of creating favorable conditions for multinational corporations to rob and exploit the people of Mexico and other less fortunate nations...which then leads desperate people in those nations to flee to the very country (USA) that is at least partially responsible for making their home countries unlivable in the first place. Where they are then branded as "illegal aliens" and further treated like crap.

arrgh, the hypocricy and Orwellian doublethink on this issue drives me nuts.

They don’t come by ‘legal’ means because the same goddamn nativist sentiment that sends people running through the desert (where there are now white people with guns hoping to run across them!) has made the immigration and nationalization process so convoluted and difficult and expensive that it is far out of the reach of nearly everyone.

Yup. I say this nearly every time the subject comes up, but as someone who has actually gone through the immigration process -- my husband is from Australia -- I can attest to it being a very expensive, convoluted pile of bullshit. And white Australians coming into the country on fiance visas don't have to deal with nearly as much as Mexicans attempting to enter the U.S. through working visas do. Not even close. Those who talk about "waiting your turn" and "following the rules" should really have to do it themselves before they are allowed to open up their mouths on the subject. They have no fucking clue. You have to be privileged as hell to do it the "right" way, and those in charge have planned it like that on purpose.

People are dying. They are dying because the U.S. has decided that Mexicans who cannot afford the official process of entering the country are better off dead than working here. They are dying because of American racism and political posturing. They are dying because those who have power are horrifically abusing it. We, Americans, are responsible for this. These deaths are on our heads.

Yes, this. People are killing themselves to come here and be exploited, trafficked, enslaved. They don't come by 'legal' means because the same goddamn nativist sentiment that sends people running through the desert (where there are now white people with guns hoping to run across them!) has made the immigration and nationalization process so convoluted and difficult and expensive that it is far out of the reach of nearly everyone. But there's still a need for people to do ugly, disgusting, dangerous work at long hours for low pay, so undocumented workers are used as a highly replaceable labor force.

It's fucking evil. (And I don't just say that because my stepmom's last name is Ojeda. Though that is a factor.)
