I wrote this review weeks ago, and meant to post a link as a comment in the 1959-61 thread regarding Motown and misogyny, but it appears to be closed. So instead, I'll put it here, if that's OK.

Why I don't like Marvin Gaye's "I'll Be Doggone":

Tammi, Tammi, you got it! Marvin declares this on a song produced by Berry Gordy on their first album together and boy was he ever so right. Tammi repeats the same complement to him. Marvin at least had the good fortune of several years at the top to convince the world of the depth of Tammi's statement. The world was cheated beyond imagination when Tammi was lost to us so soon, but at least we have magnificent glimmers into the reason Marvin was so overwhelmed by her pure talent! Ain't No Mountain rocks!

The best thing I ever read about the difference between the two million-selling "Grapevines" observed that the Pips' version is without doubt. Gladys' narrator has had her suspicions confirmed by this reliable source, she's certain her partner has been screwing around, and now they're out on their ear. Her magnificently snarky reading of the "if it's true, please tell me, dear" line is dripping in venom - she's got them cornered.

By contrast, Marvin's version is a neurotic soup of paranoia; we have absolutely no idea whether this information is true or not, or whether it's all just in his head - and neither does he. His "if it's true, please tell me, dear" is a genuine plea, but we already know the answer won't stop his demons; he's on the edge and likely to snap any time soon.

Still loving this series, by the way, even if opportunities for reading have been few and far between.

Magnificent heartbreaking piece about Tammi Terrell - and very true. The rumours that fly around her cancer are a conveninet way of playing down the gender based violence she experienced. Another much misrepresented woman is also of course Florence Ballard

I'm really enjoying your Motown series and decided to stop lurking and leave a comment already. My partner and I just spent our summer vacation on a cross country drive and basically the only thing we listened to (with the exception of one Isley Brothers album) was the complete Motown singles box set. I've always loved Motown and I am always ready to read someone's thoughts about Motown in general, or very specifically, Stevie Wonder (endless, endless conversations about his best album always end in a stalemate though)

1965 was a great year, and as much as I hate to say it, one of my favorites from that year is "My World is Empty Without You." I'm not a huge Supremes fan. (Especially not after hearing "Buttered Popcorn" with Flo singing lead. What could have been....) But, that song is so good. I'm going to have to listen to "Operator" again. I'm such a fan of Brenda Holloway, but I can't remember if it was her version or Mary Wells' that I liked better. Looking forward to reading more!
